Okay, I’ll be the first to admit it, I watch “The Secret Life of the American Teenager”. Despite the generic character names, cheesy plot line, and bad acting, I sit by my television every Monday evening waiting to see who will break up, have sex, or get pregnant next.
Last week, however, Grace’s mom finds a book on her counter titled 50 Spices, hmmm where can this be going? Anyways, she doesn’t think much of it until George begins reading excerpts aloud and the seemingly innocent book reveals itself to be textual porn. I’m assuming most of us can put two and two together and realize that they are addressing the novel 50 Shades of Grey. I suppose a part of me had been waiting for one of my shows to make a comment about the trilogy, but of all shows I didn’t expect it to be “Secret Life”.
I didn’t have a problem with the criticism of the book, everyone has their own opinions and such, until Grace’s mom said that it was degrading to women. I’m sorry Abc Family, but did you even read the books? The entire plot circled around Christian giving up his woman-degrading lifestyle because he was in love with Ana. And beside that point, all the women Christian treated like submissives consented to the treatment. In a basic sense, BDSM is a form of role play. Plus, there were deep reasons behind Christian’s actions such as (spoiler alert!) the neglect and abuse from his mother, the death of his mother (and abandonment in the same sense), and Elena’s way of “helping” him.
Yes, the book does have several naughty scenes, get over it. I haven’t seen such a fuss about strip clubs or porn like I have for a simple book. No one is forcing you to read it. Simple as that. However, I do request that if you insist on making a critical comment about the book, please (and I’m asking nicely) read the entire book first and don’t only focus on the sex. Thank you.
